These drawings are pretty organized. If you saw my actual notes you would think I was obcessed and going mad. I’ve found it takes a good bit of obcession and madness to do family research, because so many events and circumstances can spread families out. Below is the current state of my research of the Schlachet Family.
This is my family’s tree. I knew most of this tree before this large amount of research, but I never new Jaye married and had kids. I’ve been in touch with both his kids, Jeremy and Sara, via facebook. They are both a little younger than me.
This is a tree I’ve put together using Peter Blood’s family research. For a second, I thought Gertrude Stine was actually Gertrude Stein, but they are not the same person. This Gertrude is about 20 years younger.
This tree I’ve put together from various sources, including David and Daniel, both of whom I’ve been in contact with. Kalman is mentioned in Peter Blood’s research.
This large tree is thanks to Anita, who contacted me several weeks ago. It is because of her enthusiasm in finding me that’s prompted my renewed interest in family research. I’ve been in touch with her and her brother Elan. I’ve also contacted Jared via email.. Jared is a photographer in Los Angeles and I will soon meet him! His brother is Daniel, but not that actor Daniel. I am trying to figure out which Daniel that is. There’s a mistake in this drawing.. Nora’s child Nora should be named Ronit.
These are three small trees which do not touch either of the larger trees. I met Eli years ago in San Diego, when his kids were small. I’ve been in infrequent contact with Josh, who attends Berekeley now. I’m trying to get in touch with his parents.
Here is my current list of unknowns:
- Sigmund Schlachet, 1907-1981 (Ft Lauderdale)
- Morris Schlachet, 1907-1981 (Ft Lauderdale)
- Berta Schlachet, 1920-2002 (Ohio) — Bruno’s Wife (source; Anita)
- Mala Schlachet, 1900-1992 (Nebraska)
- E. S. Schlachet, 1952-1998 (Eli?)
- Michal Schlachet (F) (Facebook)
- Tomas Schlachet (Israel) (Facebook)
- Szymon Schlachet (Holocaust Survivor, b. Bielsko)
Alec Shlahet, my father in law, passed away on July 4 2011. He would have loved to see this tree and he loved old cameras as well. Good luck with your family research!

My Father, Daniel Hartley (Schlachet), Herman & Gertrude Schlachet’s youngest child, passed away February 14, 2014. He wold have been 98 April 9th. My sister, Carolyn Veronda, passed away June 16, 2014. Has not been a good year.
I have been in recent contact with Robert Hartley, the son of Arnold Hartley (Schlachet) who is the son of Herman & Gertrude Schlachet. You can contact him at hartleyro@gmail.com. Be sure and contact him as he has lots of information. Be sure and ask him how and why his Dad changed his last name from Schlachet to Hartley. When my family moved from Chicago, IL to Los Angeles, CA we went to court and legally changed our name to Hartley also.
Hello – My great-great grandmother was Marjem (Miriam) Schlachet, born in Bochnia (part of Galicia, I believe) in 1854. We’ve heard that she had a sister, Golda, born in 1860. If we find more information about Schlachets, we’ll pass it along. Good luck with your research!
