a rock out at sea 2

(800×800)

this is a crop from a frame i shot under a full moon last week on miramontes beach. it’s a 12 minute exposure using a 210mm nikkor-w on ilford hp5+.

it exemplifies the serenity of night shooting.

pacifica at night

(800×631)

i went out shooting with cynthia last weekend. we always have a great time. we went to this pier in pacifica, then down to miramontes beach. i exposed five sheets of film, each were 12 minute exposures on ilford hp5+ at iso 800.

each time i go night shooting, it becomes easier. i remember to bring water, my iphone is fully charged and loaded with music (what else can you do in darkness for 12 minutes?).

i’m really appreciating the beauty of both images shot under the full moon, plus the experience of shooting with others at night. the locations are always peaceful, it is light enough out to see where you are going, and long exposures always produce interesting images.

well, it’s happening again two years later. our landlord is selling the property we’re in.

i already know what it feels like to have a bunch of random people walk through your place with their dirty shoes and their attitudes. . . .

but this time, our landlord didn’t give us the schedule in advance. i had to look it up myself, only to find our place will be open for 6 days out of the next 11, including even open houses.

a tent, some light, a meter, and a camera

recently i got a chimera light bank (“softbox”).

oh boy, does this make a big difference. the bank itself controls spill-over and has an inner baffle to diffuse the light before it hits the outer layer. the light i get from it is super nice.

i took some other shots if you’d like to see — one of my favourite vacuum tube, and one of ryan which came out particularly well:

here’s one using the softbox and a little canon g3:

this is one of my older cameras which carries in it a lot of memories. it’s an old russian 6×6 camera, built like a brick. sadly, the shutter went out on a trip down in southern california in 2003. it’s not seen a roll of film since. it took my minimally famous boot photo on its last adventure. (gosh.. i owned only 10 cameras back then!)

redwood shores at night

i took this photo at night under a full moon that was partly obscured by clouds. most of the light in this photo is from office buildings. i went out with some camera-nerdy folks from genentech on a night shoot. the location wasn’t that great, but i had a good time. and it’s always nice meeting friendly photo folks.
