i get excited when i get in touch with other schlachets.
last week i joined facebook, a big social networking site. as i usually do, i did a search for “schlachet” and found a joel, in berkeley. i sent him a note asking if he’s from the large group of schlachets from ohio. no, he said. he’s from sandiego, but he’s met some of the ohio family.
i sent him a message back, briefly telling him about how i found an eli schlachet living in san diego and i arranged to meet him. my dad, brother, and i were on our way from los angeles to the san diego zoo. we did meet. eli was married and had two boys, just like my father (and my father’s father). my dad’s recollection of his family basically jived with that of eli. if i’m thinking correctly, both their fathers emigrated to the u.s. from israel about the same time.
so this joel, in berkeley, is the son of eli schlachet. one of the kids i met back in 1995 or 1996 in san diego.
is it weird that i feel some sort of draw to schlachet folk? i want to learn more about them. i want to be linked to them on websites.
when i was growing up, it was just my immediate family, my grandfather who moved from ohio to florida, my uncle in los angeles, and my dad’s half sister. his sister carolyn was from the zacuto family. a couple years ago i got in touch with a jeff zacuto, who’s met my uncle and aunt.
as i get older, i guess i’m learning more about family and understanding more why people are so interested in geneaology. it’s like history that means something very personally to you.
it makes me wonder, why there are a large group of schlachets in ohio who my family never kept in touch with. it seems like different parts of the family came into the u.s. at different times. my grandfather lived in ohio, did he know these other schlachets? i’m just guessing that eli is still around, i wonder if he remembers when we came to visit. i wish i knew/remembered more about my family.
jared schlachet, the photographer from los angeles, is from ohio. i need to make a trip down there, as we told each other we’d have to meet up if one of us was near the other.
jason, jared, joel.
My father, Stefan (Solomon) Schlachet was from Poland and immigrated to New York with my mother and sister in July 1950. He was a physician and practiced in N.Y. I was born in NY in 1955. I was told there weren’t any other “Schlachets”…so, much to my surprise, I found this website and discovered that there are. Could any of us be related? The holocaust took most of my family so I am very anxious to find out if there are any left related to me. My grandparents were Henry and Frania Schlachet.
Hi Jason,
it has been long time. How are you doing? Please take a moment to email i will send in all detail. I would like to keep in touch.

My mom’s maiden name was Schlachetke. From the old German province of Pommerania. Was a WW2 refugee and ended up in northern Germany as a young girl before emigrating to Canada in the early 1950’s.
Probably a derivation of Schlachet.
Cheers.

Jason, not really interested in blogs but stumbled across yours while trying to find some info on bits I need for my Shen Hao and ended up staying for a while…. An enjoyable wee visit thanks…
I was born Andrea R. Schlachet in Chicago, IL in 1941. My grandfather, Herman Schlachet immigrated from Novi Tag in the Tetra Mountains to the US when he was 11 to live with his sister. He moved to Chicago and began an apprenticeship as a pharmacist. He and my father, Daniel B. Schlachet, owned Schlachet’s Pharmacy on Madison and Lotus in Chicago until I was 10. My sister Carolyn was losing her hearing due to allergies and the Dr’s recommended we move to a warmer climate. California here we come. At that time we went to court and changed our last name to Hartley. My Dad’s brother had changed his to Hartley years before for business reasons so it made sense to use the Hartley name. I lived in SoCal until 1982 when I moved to Dallas, TX for 20 years. I now live in Burneyville, OK with my husband Joe. I have two grown daughters and 3 wonderful grandchildren.
PS – My sister’s name is Carolyn.
My name is Neil Cohen…I am Anita Schlachets’ cousin, Rita Cohens’ son, Ayton Cohens’ nephew. Contact me if you would like, we are family….
Hey Jason – Saw your blog for some reason today. Must have come through linkedin. Anyway, I appreciate it. Lots of interesting things you have in there. Talk to you someday – Andy
I saw the post with your brother Tom and it reminded me to take a photo of this painting I had done of him when he was in my art class at Plainfield High School — Tom was a favorite of mine and in fact, I still have a bowl he made in a ceramics class I taught, sitting on the shelf in my office. The link is to the painting I have hanging in my dining room.
Your photography is lovely – I particularly admire the portraits. I’ve been following your blog for several years – I had originally found this blog when I was looking to send Tom a photo of this painting after I’d rediscovered it – but continued because I found your photography so compelling.
So now, years later, I finally get around to taking a picture and sending it on.
Hallo to anybody,
My birthname was Schlachettke and my father came from Stolp (today Slupsk in Poland) The first name of my father was Ernst and his father’s name was Otto.
It would be nice to hear from other Schlachettkes. My grand mother spelt her name Clara Schlachetke (Birthname Rimpler) i.e. with one T.

My birthname was Schlachetke, I was born just outside Stolp. My father’s name was Gustav and his father’s and brother’s name was Otto. I don’t know of any relative called Ernst or Clara and nobody is alive anymore to ask. I am sure there is a connection somewhere since that name is spelled in a lot of different ways and hardly ever with one T.

I’m looking for the family of Bernard Schlachet, born 1912 in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia. He married my relative Berta Vogel. I believe they survived the war in Russia, and heard they had a son Tommi who lives in Israel. Anything familiar here?
Through a convoluted way I was e mailed your information. I was very close with your grandfather Harry and when he was in Cleveland would see him all the time. I went to see him in Florida. I lived in Tucson with Stuart in 1975 and met your mom many times. They visited when they came to Cleveland for a art show where your mother had crafts for sale. I never even heard of the rest of the family. Are they related. I only know the tree you did with Harry, my dad etc. Would love to hear from you.
Hallo, I’m german. I search Schlachetke Family from Stolp. Children from Ernst Schlachettke.
Please per Mail. Sincerly Adrian

Hi Jason,
This is the cousin in NY (grandson of Charlie (Kalmon) Schlachet). I recently started looking into the Schlachet Tree again after a few years. (I believe we spoke about 7 or 8 years ago). Don’t know how old your post about finding Sigmund Schlachet, Morris Schlachet, and Mala Schlachet, but I recently figured out the connection and have a pretty extensive tree growing. Let me know if you’re interested in details.
Best,
Dan
