ready for toronto. as far as gear goes.
enough equipment to meter, expose, and develop large format film. i hope i’m not overpacking. i should be able to go out shooting, then develop my film in the hotel room at night – that’s the goal. it feels a little silly to be packing graduated cylinders in my carry-on.. but i’ll need them. and i can ship them back before i fly home.

thanks to friends jonathan and adrian for their company and patience while we conjure up another dendeng pedas dinner.
we opened with an annapolis 2003 pinot noir. then we server dinner (‘pedas and deep fried potstickers — spicy!) with the albert mann 2004 gewurztraminer (my reason to drink white). then angel food cake with strawberries (powdered sugar, grand marnier, cracked black pepper) and chill-out blend tea.
good and yummy all around.
all thursdays should be like this.
this dinner was basically at the request of jonathan after reading about it on my blog :)

one of the films in the grafmatic was of the aluminum church in courtland. the tones are a lot smoother compared to the polaroid. cropping out all the bad stuff wasn’t such a bad thing in the end. i can’t help myself but keep detail images to illustrate how much information is really in the image. my original scan was about 350MB.

today i received in the mail one of the first copies of my mom’s book, you may already be a wiener (and other midlife wake-up calls). some family antics (many instigated by my brother and me) are now in print. it’s so cool to see my mom’s ambition in motion.
i’m so proud of her! writing a column that’s increasing in circulation. self publishing a book that’s now listed on amazon. being booked for speaking engagements.

today i picked up some kodak portra 400nc in 4×5. i think i’m ready to try 4×5 color. now, who will let me shoot them? :)
i also managed to make time to develop the film from my grafmatic holder. turns out, it has worn felt and is leaking on the short end where the numbers are. not a major leak, but bad enough to warrant cropping. i wonder how i can get this fixed? it’s probably too late for my canada trip.
i also figured out what to do about spent fixer. the answer is to take it on saturday after 8am to sf recycling. show your drivers license to show you live in the city, and they’ll take bad stuff off your hands. the key (i had to learn the hard way) is to bring the material in throw-away containers. they won’t give them back to you.
now i’m really wanting to find a more permanent mounting solution for that bausch and lomb tessar……..

the weather today was fantastic.
got some java at farley’s.
gassed up ($3.14/gallon, ugh).
drove down the san jose for the big camera show.
saw tim the filter guy. saw petra the book lady. i saw a beautiful large format studio camera, with multiple extensions, and this honkin 11×14 lens. yowz! if only i had the space……
i didn’t pick up the 67mm diameter UV/haze filter i need. i also didn’t pick up that 7 1/2″ old lens i saw, that worked pretty well.
on my way back i headed towards the hills, since they caught my eye. i was composing the shot you see above, when an indian couple stopped by on their walk to talk to me. i had a nice chat with them. luckily i had some polaroids with me. it was great! i should always keep polaroids with me.
i shot the last 2 sheets in the grafmatic i have, its only taking me weeks to test the damned thing.
didn’t get any camera/film club people to identify, email, message, or call me today. maybe next time. i’m going to try to setup a meeting and demo or something.

for one day a year, boman and i are the same age. it is our special day together. this year, boman suggested we have a party. it happened last night.
- hand made invitations
- a constant flow of sushi into the party room of deep sushi
- a selection of excellent sake from true sake
- a surprise appearance from two fantasic chocolate cakes from tartine bakery
- the most interesting mix of music i could muster (an ecclectic mix of jazz and electronica in at least six languages)
- the prompt (and early) arrival of twenty six friends and coworkers
possibly the most fun you can have legally on a work night.
i think it’s safe to say, everybody had a super time.

forgot to post. saturday night, we made dendeng pedas, with some variation for the better. and when i say better, i mean brackets-b-better-brackets-slash-b.
the marinade this time was: some soy sauce, equal tamari, pour over steaks in a glass pan and smush down. cover with lots of cracked pepper. plastic wrap pressed down onto it, fridge for an hour.
instead of frying them in the wok this time, i fried them a few at a time in a pan on the stove, storing in a clean glass dish. the marinade thickened a lot on the pan, i made sure to wipe it up with the beef as it cooked. i forced myself to book the beef until it was a little crispy.
then i fried the scallions, 1 thinly sliced jalapeno, and 2 thinly sliced cerrano chiles. then i added the fried beef and squeezed most of the juice of 1 lime over it all. stir fry and serve hot.
when i plate, i squeezed a little more lime juice over the beef. tres bien.
