tonight i picked up sally mann’s immediate family, one of the most amazing photography books i’ve seen. it sends chills down my spine.

i paged through it. then went for a drive. and thought.

people.

i’ve been slowly positioning myself to do people photography. i’m not sure i’ll ever be able to do something as personal as mann. could i?

anyways, the gears are turning. today i bought 40 rolls of 120 film. tomorrow i want to bring my pentax to work and see how many people i can force myself to approach and shoot. just a test roll. develop it in PMK to see if that would work for sunday. i’ll pack my camera now. it’s only 10 shots on a roll, that can’t be too hard can it? 5 people?

Posted by Jason on March 31, 2004

last night i was again in the zone. i decided to tackle two negatives i thought would be difficult to print. i tried using a new technique as well: exposing the negative for different times at different contrasts to pull more detail out of it. the process worked like a champ. using my home-made dodging tool, i came up with some good prints from negatives that were pretty flat. and i used one of my best darkroom tools ever, the notebook. i took notes on everything i did. i can go back and re-print negatives that took time to figure out, with little prep time. writing notes in the darkroom is one of the best choices i’ve made.

today after work i’m going to go buy a lot of film for this weekend. i’m excited — no, anxious and scared actually — about sunday. in any case, i’m going to be 30-40 rolls of film. i just hope k+s is stocked up. i’m buying it today in case they’re low, then i have a few days to get film elsewhere.

also last night, elmer came by to pick up the tfp prints i made for him. i was so proud of them.. and they were well received. he was excited.

and i’m about ready to present some prints to jim, who is waiting patiently. it’s been such a good week for printing.

in the zone

Posted by Jason on March 30, 2004

i was in the zone last night and got done all my printing for my first tfp transaction. everything turned out the way i want. a few weeks back, i tried to do the prints with the model present to show how the darkroom work went. i was too nervous and nothing turned out. last night, everything just clicked. darkroom work is really a solo act for me. this week i’ll try to work on some hard-to-print negatives for my coworker.

approaching random people

Posted by Jason on March 29, 2004

i was on the beach near point reyes yesterday when i spotted a medium format camera from yards away. it looked like a mamiya rangefinder. i was curious. ryan urged me to go investigate. so we walked up to the photographer, who turned out to be a nice older german (?) lady with a
makina 67. i tolder that i too was into medium format and what cameras i used. she asked to take our picture. we agreed, and she metered then took some shots of us on the beach. her husband walked up and told us to smile, and she scolded him. “don’t smile,” she told us. she took a couple shots, and i asked if she could send me some prints. i wrote down my address for her as she unloaded her camera. she asked me if i knew of any place in san francisco to get film developed. i really didn’t know, but suggest she ask the guys at photographer’s supply on bryant street. she knew of the place. i told her how i wished i could approach random people as she just did to take their picture. so we said our thank you and goodbyes, and parted ways.

maybe one day. it was great running into her, and my minute socialization led to an interesting experience.

nerdsession

Posted by Jason on March 24, 2004

had a hard core nerd session tonight on offramp.org

  • worked on getting php5 working on the new machine
  • got 64bit mysql running on the new machine
  • moved all but 3 websites to the new machine
  • pruned dns and httpd.conf on old machine
  • killed zope cms on the old machine
  • moved webmail to the new machine
  • the new machine is fun. things are working pretty well on it. i’m almost to the point where i can reboot it and affect only web/database services (and not affect any users logged in).

    picked up and set down

Posted by Jason on March 11, 2004

this one child, this boy of perhaps seven or eight, though he might have been older, his growth stunted by hunger, was not like the other children. he did not join them in running and shouting, shoving and chasing, and tossing back and forth whatever came to hand. virlomi thought at first he must be crippled, but no, his staggering gait was because he was walking right among the stones of the streambed, and had to adjust his steps to keep his footing.

every now and then he bent over and picked up something. a little later, he would set it back down.

she came closer, and saw that what he picked up was a stone, and when he set it back down it was only a stone among stones.

what was the meaning of this task, on which he worked so intently, and which had so little result?

she walked to the stream, but well behind his path, and watched his back as he receded into the gathering gloom, bending and rising, bending and rising.

he is acting out my life, she thought. he works at his task, concentrating, giving his all, missing out on the games of his playmates. and yet he makes no difference in the world at all.

then, as she looked at the streambed where he had already walked, she saw that she could easily find his path, not because he left footprints, but because of the stones he picked up were lighter than the others, and by leaving them on the top, he was marking a wavering line of light through the middle of the streambed.

it did not really change her view of his work as meaningless — if anything, it was further proof. what could such a line possibly accomplish? the fact that there was a visible result made his labor all the more pathetic, because when the rains came it would all be swept away, the stones retumbled upon each other, and what difference would it make that for a while, at least, there was a dotted line of lighter stones along the middle of the streambed.

then, suddenly, her view of it changed. he was not marking a line. he was building a stone wall.

no, that was absurd. a wall whose stones were as much as a meter apart? a wall that was never more than one stone high?

a wall, made of the stones of india. picked up and set down almost where they had been found. but the stream was different because the wall had been built.

is this how the great wall of china had begun? a child marking off the boundaries of his world?

    nice piece of glass

sometimes i just can’t help but admire the beauty of lens glass. i totally understand when buffs say things like, “wow that’s a nice glass.”

    today.

Posted by Jason on March 10, 2004

today i decided to get back into reading. i walked to downtown and had thai food for dinner. i brought with me shadow of the hegemon, the sixth book in the ender series. i found the seventh book, shadow puppets, and picked that up. i also picked up flophouse, this book i read about; it’s text and amazing photographs about skid row in new york city, known as the bowery. the images in this book are really inspiration for me.

so dinner was so-so, i whipped through 60 pages over chai at DANASTREET, then ran into anthony and mike. i took part in their discussion about job prospects. then a swift walk home where i resume my cameraspotting obcession.

    hassplay

Posted by Jason on March 06, 2004

this weekend i’m renting a 503cw kit. my notes so far:

  • they didnt have a pme45 so i tried out the pme90. don’t like it. much prefer wlf to it.
  • the screen is surprisingly bright
  • a kit isn’t as light as i thought it would be
  • i miss having an electronic body.. i want the camera to adjust to aperature priority metering instead of it telling me how to
  • the hasselblad strap i got with my rolleicord came in handy
  • manic.

Posted by Jason on March 05, 2004

    i’m all manic today.

backups were 100% every night this week at work. i moved the last application off an old e10k platform at work. i’m downloading the latest build of solaris 10 to play with. i’m finally got a new sunfire v210 jumpstart image to work. and this morning, i woke up early thinking it was saturday since i’m so anxious to get my hands on the 503cw i’ve reserved for the weekend.

    happy times.

    holgaroid

Posted by Jason on March 03, 2004

the hoglaroid is a fun and monsterous camera. basically you take a $20 plastic camera, attach a $100 polaroid back, and shoot $1/shot polaroid film with it. what’s not to love? the border came out cool on the scan. this would be a good (but expensive) photoblog medium. now if only local stores would start carrying this (new? resurrected?) film. after i waste this color pack i have a black+white pack to play with.

    today i voted.
