i hate it when some uses the phrase “my better half” to refer to their significant other.

to me, it’s a double insult. first, it implies you are not at least equal to your partner. secondly, the phrase goes against my view of what a relationship is in the first place. i think a relationship is the joining of two individuals into a coupleship or pairing. i’m afraid of thinking i am only half a person and that i need to find my “other half” to be complete. anyways, my view rules — aren’t two heads better than one?

there are sub-50$ digital cameras out there. would be cool to make sort of a photo journal with one. even 320×240 would be fine. as long as it doesnt break. we’ll see.

un mensaje de los trabajadores

so today i decided to check out mi pueblo, this mexican grocery store not too far from me. turns out there were people yelling and carring picket signs outside the door. good day to see what the place was about.

its a small, quaint grocery store. i was there to pick up a few lemons, which i did. i think i was the only caucasian in the place, which was kinda fun. i like trying new things..

so on my way out i made sure to get one of the flyers they were passing out. the guy took mine from the bottom of the stack.. one side of it was in english. the paper compared working at mi pueblo stores to other union stores..

wages: $10-20/hr vs. $7-9/hr
benefits: free for whole family vs. $30-60 per month
vacation: up to five weeks per year vs. 1 week per hear for first 3 years
retirement fund: yes vs no
overtime pay: yes, double for holidays vs. m.p. has paid over $270,000 in back pay for cheating workers out of breaks, lunch, and overtime

pretty interesting. i’m undecided if i support union labor or not, but if the back pay is true then i don’t want to support a shop that runs that way.

the spanish on the back side was quotes from the employees that were standing there.

wine..

my small wine collection grew today. two bottles of cab, two bottles of vintage port, one bottle of vintage port for tonite+this week.

i realized the the way to really do wine is to buy at least 3 or 4 bottles when you find a wine you like. if you keep in a buying cycle, the bottles will age while in your collection. eventually you’ll hit a point where bottles can come out for drinking. then you have a stream of bottles in and bottles out. that way you drink well aged bottles and constantly replace them. some of the wines i’ve tasted are so yummy i can’t imagine waiting years to open them up. maybe that’s why it’s good to get more than one bottle of each. :-)

actually, ya. then you know what the wine tastes like and can look forward to opening it in a few years– it may be even better!
