i hate it when some uses the phrase “my better half” to refer to their significant other.
to me, it’s a double insult. first, it implies you are not at least equal to your partner. secondly, the phrase goes against my view of what a relationship is in the first place. i think a relationship is the joining of two individuals into a coupleship or pairing. i’m afraid of thinking i am only half a person and that i need to find my “other half” to be complete. anyways, my view rules — aren’t two heads better than one?

there are sub-50$ digital cameras out there. would be cool to make sort of a photo journal with one. even 320×240 would be fine. as long as it doesnt break. we’ll see.

so today i decided to check out mi pueblo, this mexican grocery store not too far from me. turns out there were people yelling and carring picket signs outside the door. good day to see what the place was about.
its a small, quaint grocery store. i was there to pick up a few lemons, which i did. i think i was the only caucasian in the place, which was kinda fun. i like trying new things..
so on my way out i made sure to get one of the flyers they were passing out. the guy took mine from the bottom of the stack.. one side of it was in english. the paper compared working at mi pueblo stores to other union stores..
wages: $10-20/hr vs. $7-9/hr
benefits: free for whole family vs. $30-60 per month
vacation: up to five weeks per year vs. 1 week per hear for first 3 years
retirement fund: yes vs no
overtime pay: yes, double for holidays vs. m.p. has paid over $270,000 in back pay for cheating workers out of breaks, lunch, and overtime
pretty interesting. i’m undecided if i support union labor or not, but if the back pay is true then i don’t want to support a shop that runs that way.
the spanish on the back side was quotes from the employees that were standing there.

my small wine collection grew today. two bottles of cab, two bottles of vintage port, one bottle of vintage port for tonite+this week.

i realized the the way to really do wine is to buy at least 3 or 4 bottles when you find a wine you like. if you keep in a buying cycle, the bottles will age while in your collection. eventually you’ll hit a point where bottles can come out for drinking. then you have a stream of bottles in and bottles out. that way you drink well aged bottles and constantly replace them. some of the wines i’ve tasted are so yummy i can’t imagine waiting years to open them up. maybe that’s why it’s good to get more than one bottle of each. :-)
actually, ya. then you know what the wine tastes like and can look forward to opening it in a few years– it may be even better!

i’ve decided to try public transit to get to work.
this morning i took caltrain. the commute was 10 minutes walking, 10 minutes train ride, 20 minutes walking. exercise would be good for me. plus, after work i could easily go to palo alto, or even san francisco. if i got a 10-ride pass, it would be a little cheaper.
there is a bus route that would cut my walking time in half, but unfortunately it travels in the opposite direction.

weekend was good, but socially busy. tonight i’m going to a hockey game.
need some recharge time after this. im lending my phone to t. who needs to make lots of calls to canada. voice-over-ip is cool.
this weekend i learned “equal” sugar substitute tastes nasty!!!!!!!!!
oh, my new mp3 player now has a 256mb card in it, for 384mb total.
and..
deadline is upon us. the president is giving a statement today at 5pm pst. gosh, the headlines this morning: elizabeth smart’s family getting flooded with story rights deals, a train derailed last night in the east bay prompting a toxic scare, the killer of eddie “gwen” arrajo is going to trial, and we are hours away from saddam hussein’s deadline and may be in war in a matter of days.

so i’ve been on the quest for a new mp3 player. i listen to music all the time. i can’t walk for more than a block or two without at least a song in my head — walking is boring otherwise. exercise? music, please. and while i’m at work? dont make me put myself on hold so i have the muzak to liven up my day.
below is my story on the quest to get a new music player…

so at work there’s a large political bickering going on concerning a project i’m involved with.
after work today i saw someone throw trash out of their car window onto a parking lot in sunnyvale. this morning, a driver changed lanes at least four times on central expressway, trying to weave through traffic– not using his turn signal.
a few weeks ago i was annoyed by this guy i chat with on aim. he obviously was away from his computer or talking to other people. after asking questions and never hearing back, i got frustrated and left. well, today i msg’d him and we chatted a little bit. and i asked him what he’s been up to. no response. then i remembered why i was upset with him last time. i realize its a pretty discontinuous chat medium.. but to have it like that all the time is annoying. might as well talk to myself.
hrm. what else. im one of the first people taking the veritas netbackup certification test.
and i cant decide if i should open a bottle of wine or not. oh, and tonight i cleaned my dish drying rack.
thank whomever i have a good home audio system. i don’t know what i’d do without it.
